During the summer, destress and relax lakeside on the sparkling waters of Big Bear Lake. Escape the stuffy city and breathe in the cool mountain air. Summer temperatures in Big Bear are usually in the low 80s and the sun is almost always shining. You can swim anywhere along the shore of the lake, but swim with caution, as lifeguards are only stationed at certain beaches around the lake. Swimmers are also required to stay within 50 feet of the shoreline. If you stay at one of our lakefront homes, you can swim off the dock behind your rental or walk to one of the area’s nearby beaches.
The McDill Swim Area in Meadows Park is one of the most popular beaches on Big Bear Lake for families. There are lifeguards on duty at the beach, water slides, a floating dock, public restrooms, and a snack bar.
If you want to explore the lake on the water, consider renting a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard. You can paddle around on the sparkling waters of the lake and explore its coves and caves, many of which are only accessible by non-motor boats. There are several stores along the lake where you can rent kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards for a few hours or for the whole day.
During the fall and spring, the temperatures in Big Bear are in the high 50s to low 60s, making it too cold to swim but ideal for exploring the forests surrounding the lake. Enjoy the miles of trails hiking or on a mountain bike.
Castle Rock Trail is one of Big Bear’s most popular hiking trails. The 2.4-mile trail is slightly difficult but is a gorgeous hike any time of year. The trail will take you through a dense forest with boulder outcroppings and a seasonal waterfall that makes the hike a favorite during the springtime. The hike takes you to Castle Rock, a large granite outcropping where you will often see climbers scaling its face. At the end of the hike, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Big Bear Lake.
If you like mountain biking, check out the Grandview Loop Bike Trail. The 9-mile trail is good for beginners and starts at the top of the Snow Summit Scenic Sky Chair. From there you will continue down the Skyline Trail to Grandview Point Junction. If you need to rent mountain biking gear, there are several bike shops in town.
