The beauty of a lakefront village along with fresh mountain air, and a slower pace than a big city may just be what the doctor ordered this winter. Big Bear is known for its skiing and snowboarding opportunities. For many, it’s what draws them to the area to begin with. Snow Summit, Snow Valley, and Bear Mountain, all operated by Big Bear Mountain Resort, are a few of the best locales for Big Bear snowboarding during your next winter vacation.
Bear Mountain & Snow Summit
The mountain is one of three mountains that make up Big Bear Mountain Resort. The mountain provides multiple snowboarding opportunities, on a variety of runs that are fit for beginners all the way up to the most expert snow sports enthusiasts. The resort does not offer printed trail maps, so you’ll want to download their mobile app before heading out. Snow Summit is the second mountain of the resort and offers its own array of snowboarding runs.
Types of Trails
There are four levels of runs, each appropriate for a different experience level of snowboarders. For those just starting out, choose the easy routes marked with a green circle on the map.
As you level up, try your hand at more difficult trails, which are marked with a blue square. Snowboarders with multiple years of experience can move on to trails marked with a black diamond, indicating extra challenges like tight curves, steep slopes, moguls, and more.
For those who have spent a lifetime with a snowboard strapped to your feet, you can venture out into “expert” territory. The double black diamond status of these slopes warns of steep slopes, tight curves, moguls, and other obstacles to reach the bottom safely.
Freestyle Terrain & Slow Zones
These are located in various places all around the mountain. Slow Zones are at the base of the mountain and are a safe area to stop once you get to the bottom of a run. The Slow Zones are marked with a yellow circle.
Snow Valley
The area is the newest mountain to be part of Big Bear Mountain Resort. However, it has been its own fun-filled snowboard destination since 1924. Make sure you stay on the trails, as only the trails are maintained and patrolled.
