Open May through October, the Big Bear Historical Museum first opened to the public in 1982 after a long period of renovation and restoration. Once up and running, this Big Bear museum soon began to delight visitors by presenting them with the chance to walk through time as they browsed office buildings, stores, cabins and barns that have stood the test of time. Today, the tradition continues as visitors stop by daily to make the most of a look around a time gone by and learn about those who turned Big Bear into the city it is today.

Rental providers like Getboards Kayak & Paddle Board Rentals and Paddles and Pedals also provide paddleboard rentals and are not necessarily associated with a marina. Some rental vendors also offer paddleboard delivery, allowing you to have your paddleboard rental delivered to your vacation cabin without having to go to a store, dock, or marina.

Other marinas and rental providers located around the lake with similar rates include Getboards Kayak & Paddle Board Rentals, Big Bear Marina, Big Bear Paddling, Paddles and Pedals, and Pine Knot Marina. If you already own your own kayak and gear, there are two public boat launches from which you can depart: one located west of Fawnskin, and one located east of the Stanfield cutoff.
Additionally, you’ll need to purchase a day-use permit (about $20) from either a public boat launch or a marina, and your kayak will need to undergo inspection for Quagga Mussels, which are considered an invasive species in North America. Once you’ve been cleared through inspection, you can start kayaking in Big Bear!

The Snow Summit Ski Resort is home to the only lift-serviced mountain biking park in all of Southern California. Widely varying terrain such as bridges, berms, and step-ups present an intriguing challenge to bike riders of all abilities.
The Skyline Ridge Trail, one of the most popular Big Bear mountain biking trails, passes through Snow Summit and has one of the most striking views in the entire valley. From here, you can see Big Bear Lake to the North and Mount San Gorgonio to the South.
The trail from Pine Knot Trail to Grand View Point consists of three miles of single-track that you can ride each way, while Cougar Crest Trail has two miles of single-track and Alpine Pedal Path has three and a half miles of paved pathway. Finally, Hanna Flats and Grays Peak have unbeatable views and a cross-country mountain biking descent, for those looking for a greater challenge than normal.
Depending on where you’re planning your mountain biking adventure, there are a wide variety of rental shops that can help you get started. Even if you’re bringing your own mountain bike to Big Bear on vacation, these stores can help with repairs, equipment, and trail advice that will come in handy.
If you’re interested in checking out the biking trails on Snow Summit, the resort is home to the Slopeside Rental Shop, which offers an array of downhill and cross-country mountain bikes and related gear, all situated just a short distance away from the scenic Sky Chairs that will take you to Southern California’s only mountain biking park with lift service.
With terrain ranging from step-ups and berms to bridges, Snow Summit’s park keeps things interesting for riders of all skill levels. If you’re just starting out, Small Wonder and the Skill Builder Park will be the best places for you. Advanced riders, meanwhile, should check out Miracle Mile and Party Wave. Tickets for the park are usually about $20 for a single day, with 20% discounts available if purchased at least 72 hours in advance.
To the north of Snow Summit along the southern shore of Big Bear Lake, Bear Valley Bikes offers bike rentals from $10 per hour for front suspension mountain bikes to $120 for a full day (eight hours) on a full suspension downhill mountain bike. Equipment and repairs are also offered.
