There is a magical time of year when what was once a sprawling green sea becomes an ocean of warm hues and golden colors. When the morning air gains a crisp sharpness that stings the lungs yet awakens the mind as the creatures of lore and mystery come out of their yearlong slumber to dance and play beneath the moonlight. During this time of year, many of us feel reborn anew, and, for many, this is the time of year we look forward to with bated breath. However, it can sometimes be tricky to decide how you will spend your Hallows Eve. Well, if you are finding yourself trying to decide and choose a place to spend your night of haunting fun, then read on about all the fun and excitement that can be found when you celebrate Halloween in Big Bear, California!
As fall begins and Halloween draws near, many of the much-beloved year-round activities add spooky fun to the already exciting experience. For instance, head on over to the ziplining course with Action Tour Company each Saturday in October and take part in pumpkin smashing as you zip down the mountain. Each guest will be able to fly down the mountainside on nine zip lines, armed with a handful of pumpkin ammo as you attempt to hit targets as you speed buy. Try to keep your aim tight as there is a prize for those who hit one! To add a bit of challenge, as you go through the zipline, they get progressively higher and faster until you finally reach a top speed of 35 miles an hour!
One could also head over to Big Bear Zoo, which is always a fun way to spend an afternoon! Not only will get you the chance to see bears, mountain lions, eagles, foxes, coyotes, snow leopards, wolves, arctic foxes, and more, but you can even take part in presentations showing off a range of animals from snow leopards to bald eagles, and several fascinating animals in between. However, as October wanes, they put on several startling Halloween-inspired invents. For instance, grab some coffee as you head on over late into the night on the 8th, 9th, 15th, and 16th for their twilight safari tour, which hosts a variety of nocturnal animals, not to mention hot chocolate and cookies! On October 26th, you can enjoy Boo in the zoo, where you are invited to dress up and trick-or-treat through the zoo.
Of course, a classic modern favorite is the Big Bear Escape Room, where visitors can not only get into the elaborate setups and stories but put their brains to the test as they try to escape from their temporary imprisonment. For instance, take part in the Big Bear Asylum puzzle room where you and up to 6 people have 60 minutes to escape from the evil doctor and rescue your dear friends. You’ll quickly see why Big Bear Escape Rooms won Best Set Design by EscapeTheRooms.com.
While many businesses are putting on spooky surprises for their October guests, the community puts on fun Halloween-inspired events for you to enjoy. For instance, one can enjoy Halloween in the Village on All Hallows Eve. Where the little ones are encouraged to dress up and spend the early evening (5-7 PM) trick-or-treating at the various shops, making this a great activity for the entire family. If your little ones are still eager for more spooks and scares, then head on over to the free pumpkin patch by Big Bear Lion’s Club. As the name states, this free activity is perfect for those looking for a cheap afternoon activity. Not only do all kids under 12 get a free pumpkin, but you will find that there are several activities to enjoy such as a bounce house (who can forget the classics?), a hay maze for those looking for an adventure, and carnival games to wear the afternoon and evening away. After this, make sure to check out the Haunted Maze, where you can try to navigate the labyrinth as you try to dodge various ghouls, goblins, and other monsters and creatures of lore. While not elaborate, it is perfect for younger ones looking for a good classic scare to get into the Halloween spirit.
If you are looking for an excuse to jam out, make sure to check out “Punktober Fest” on October 23rd, which will feature a number of punk bands for you to rock out to as you enjoy the cool fall evening. Featured bands include Zero Authority, No Contest, and the Angry Samoans. However, if you find yourself a metalhead and are looking to headbang with the ghosts, then make sure you don’t miss the metal-themed show on October 29th. This show features Slaytanic (a Slayer tribute band), Woke Up Dead (Megadeth tribute band), and Far Beyond Hostile (A female Pantera tribute band).
So, as you can see the quiet mountain town truly comes alive with spooks and scares as mischief night approaches, and you’ll find that during your stay you won’t be stuck wondering what to do with the plethora of activities to choose from, many of which couldn’t fit on this list.
