In the winter, Big Bear has great skiing and snowboarding, but summertime is also full of opportunities for outdoor adventure! Whether your dad enjoys hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, or trail running, there are dozens of trails in the Big Bear area for him to enjoy.
If you are looking for a short, more leisurely hike, the Jenks Lake Trail is a great choice. As the name suggests, this trail loops around Jenks Lake and offers fantastic shoreline views throughout the hike. At 3.1 miles, this hike is rated as easy according to AllTrails.com and is a good trail for hikers of all skills levels. Bring the whole family along, and even your pet as long as they are kept on a leash, on this well-marked trail! Another great choice for a shorter hike is the Castle Rock Trail. This trail is rated as moderate, so there’s a bit more of an elevation change, but at only 2.6 miles long, it can be completed in under two hours. You’ll also be rewarded with amazing views of the lake on this hike!
One of the most popular hiking trails in Big Bear is the Pine Knot Trail ending at Grand View Point. This trail is a little more difficult, rated as moderate on AllTrails.com, and is 6.9 miles out and back. However, this trail offers some of the best views in Big Bear and is well worth the extra effort! It is the perfect difficulty level to challenge beginners without being too intense. Dogs are also welcome on this trail as long as they are kept on a leash, so bring your pooch along! This trail is not as well marked as some others in the area, but it is well traveled so you shouldn’t have an issue. It’s also welcoming to mountain bikers and horseback riders, so this is a great trail to choose if your dad likes these activities. No matter your skill level or interest, Big Bear has the perfect trail for you!
The outdoor adventure in Big Bear doesn’t end with the hiking trails! Some of the most fun to be had is out on Big Bear Lake, and for a dad who loves fishing, there couldn’t be anything better. The first thing you’ll need for a fun day of fishing is a fishing license, which is required for anyone over the age of 16. Luckily, these are easy to purchase at one of the many marinas and local fishing shops located around the lake.
After you’ve secured your license, you’ll need the gear! If you wanted a guided experience, consider chartering a fishing tour through Fish Big Bear Charter Service, Cantrell Guide Service, or Big Bear Charter Fishing. They will help you gather all the gear and bait and take you out on the water to the best fishing spots in the lake. If you want more of an independent experience, consider renting a boat from a local marina and either renting or bringing your own fishing gear. Big Bear Lake has a variety of fish, including carp, trout, bass, catfish, and crayfish. Your dad will love a day out on the water and having the opportunity to take home a souvenir! Another great local brewery is Lake Arrowhead Brewing Company. They have an expansive beer garden with plenty of outdoor dining, and award-winning brews. Mostly recently, they received a gold medal at the US Open of Beer for their Pinnacle Pale Ale in the “American Pale Ale” category.
