Biking, Hiking, and Skiing
Depending on the season you book our family friendly cabin rentals in, your vacation in the Big Bear Lake area will always have a few things to keep your busy. During the summer and fall, you can enjoy hiking and biking down the miles and miles of trails.
There are several hikes in the area where you can explore the woods and lap up views of the shimmering waters of Big Bear Lake or amazing mountain views while staying in our Big Bear Mountain cabin rentals.
The Cougar Crest Trail is one of the most popular hikes in the area. The 5.5-mile trail takes you through towering pine trees, red-barked Manzanita trees, and twisting junipers. Along the way, there are several spots where you can stop to sit on a bench and enjoy stunning views of the lake. After the first mile, the trail begins to really gain altitude, so some hikers may find the hike difficult. The trail ends at its junction with the Pacific Crest Trail. From here you can turn back around or continue another three-quarter of a mile to Bertha Peak, where you will be rewarded with amazing views of Big Bear Valley and the high desert. Dogs are allowed on the trail but must remain on leash.
If you are looking for a mountain biking trail, The Skyline Trail is the best for beginner and intermediate mountain bikers. The 15-mile trail stretches along the south shore of Big Bear Lake. You’ll get views of the lake along the whole trail, and if you look to the north you will be able to catch glimpses of Mt. San Gorgonio.
There’s also fishing, boating, jet skiing, and other watersports. Fishers flock to Big Bear Lake because of its calm waters, warm temperatures, and because the lake is stocked with rainbow trout twice a year. In addition to rainbow trout, you can catch largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, bluegill, carp, and black crappie. The north shore is a popular spot to fish from the shore or you can rent a boat and head out to Windy Point. There are also several charter boats that will take you out to the best spots on the lake and provide all of the fishing gear. The State of California requires fishing licenses for all fishermen over the age of 16. Licenses can be purchased at most bait and tackle stores.
For golf lovers, the golf courses here give you the chance to experience golfing at high altitudes. If you don’t know how it feels to putt under the shadow of the San Bernardino mountains both the Bear Mountain Golf Course and the Magic Mountain Miniature Golf are waiting for you.
During the winter you can enjoy skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, horseback riding, and mining for treasure.Big Bear Lake is home to two world-class ski resorts, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. The resorts are sister resorts, so a pass to one will get to access to ski lifts at both. The two resorts have more than 40 trails between the two of them and hundreds of acres of skiable terrain. Both parks have runs for beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers and are popular among skiers and snowboarders.
